Matheran is a hill station in Karhat Tahsil in Maharashtra at an altitude of 2,625 feet above the sea level in the Western Ghats range. The beautiful city is a major tourist destination in Maharashtra. The word Matheran is means “forest on top” or “mother forest”. For a weekend getaway, Matheran is one of the best place. History of Matheran: The beautiful valley of Matheran was discovered by Hugh Pountz Malet in the year 1850. he was a district collector in Thane. Later Lord Elphinstone, Governor of Bombay, laid foundations for establishing Matheran as a popular tourist destination in the region. To beat the extreme heat of the region, Matheran was set up.
How to Reach Matheran: One of the main reason for the growing popularity of Matheran is its closeness to Mumbai and Pune. From both these places, people can reach Matheran within a couple of minutes drive. On the other hand, one can opt for train route to reach Matheran. From Mumbai, a local train leads directly to Neral, from where by an exciting toy train journey, people can reach Matheran. The journey, too, is very relaxing and refreshing. Going past the beautiful green valleys of Neral to Matheran rejuvenates the mind of the visitors.
