Bishnupur in West Bengal is one of the vibrant weekend getaways near Kolkata. Long ago the area was better known as Mallabhum named after the Malla rulers who ruled over the region for years. One can come to Bishnupur via road as well as trains. The Eastern railways division of Indian railways runs regular local trains from Howrah station at Kolkata. One can also come to Bishnupur from Patna or the neighboring states. Located at a distance of over 500 km from Kolkata Bishnupur can be accessed by roads as well.
Besides the Rasmancha at Bishnupur one should also not miss the Jorebangla Temple of Keshta Rai. Most of the temples at Bishnupur are specimen of an era prior to the Mughal era. As a result the temple architecture speak volumes about the predominant culture of Bengal at that time.
Bishnupur is also home to Radha Govind temple, Radha madhab temple, Nandlal temple, Kalachand temple, Sarbamangala temple and the Pancharatna temple of Shyam Rai. The art work in the temples is intricate enough to arouse interest in one and all. Besides one can also visit the Krishna Balaram temple, Radhashyam Temple, Mrinmayee Temple, Radha Laljiu temple, Madan mohan temple, Chhinnamasta temple and Madan gopal temple. A host of other temples can also be seen at Bishnupur. Do not miss a view of the grand Dalmadal Kaman which is a large cannon used by the ancient rulers of Bishnupur.
